Man & Machine – Dream Team or Frankenstein’s Monster?
• Algorithms now outperform human judgment in many complex financial and non-financial decisions. Despite the apparent ascendency of machines, examples of successful human/algorithm combinations suggest an important (but different) on-going role for human judgment. However, the reality is less optimistic: many human/algorithm combinations actually under-perform unaided algorithms. In short, we often create Frankenstein’s monsters!
• What are the psychological barriers that can prevent us from creating effective human/machine combinations? What skills and mindsets must employees develop to be part of a dream team? And to foster the development of these teams, what supporting processes and cultures should organisations provide?
